Here’s my 3-day itinerary for an enriching yet wallet-friendly Hampi trip.
Day 1: Exploring the Historic Heart of Hampi
Getting There & Stay on a Shoestring
I took an overnight sleeper bus from Bangalore (₹800) and reached Hospet, the nearest town to Hampi. From there, a shared auto (₹50) took me straight to Hampi Bazaar, where I found a charming guesthouse for just ₹600 per night using Bino.
Virupaksha Temple & Riverside Wonders
After breakfast at a local eatery (₹150 for idli, vada, and filter coffee), I started my day at Virupaksha Temple, the oldest and most revered temple in Hampi. Entry was just ₹10, and the temple elephant, Lakshmi, blessed visitors for a small offering.
A short walk led me to the banks of the Tungabhadra River, where I hopped on a coracle boat ride (₹100) for a unique view of the ruins.
Sunset at Hemakuta Hill
As the sun started to set, I climbed Hemakuta Hill, a lesser-known yet stunning viewpoint offering panoramic views of Hampi’s rocky terrain. Watching the sun dip behind the ruins was magical—and completely free!
Day 2: Ruins, Temples & Hippie Island
Exploring the Royal Enclosure
After renting a cycle via Bino for ₹150, I rode to the Royal Enclosure, once the heart of Vijayanagara’s empire. The Queen’s Bath, Lotus Mahal, and Elephant Stables were awe-inspiring, and the entry fee was just ₹40.
Matanga Hill – The Best View in Hampi
For an adrenaline rush, I hiked up Matanga Hill for sunrise. The steep climb was challenging but worth it for the breathtaking aerial view of Hampi’s ruins bathed in golden light.
Crossing Over to Hippie Island
In the afternoon, I took a boat (₹50) across the river to Hippie Island, a laid-back paradise with cozy cafés and vibrant backpacker vibes. Here, I relaxed at a riverside café, enjoying banana pancakes (₹120) while soaking in the scenery.
Day 3: Offbeat Adventures & Local Flavors
Sanapur Lake & Cliff Jumping
For a break from ruins, I rented a scooter (₹250) using Bino and rode to Sanapur Lake, a hidden gem. The still waters and massive boulders made it a peaceful escape. If you’re feeling adventurous, cliff jumping here is a thrill!
Anegundi – The Forgotten Kingdom
I took a short ride to Anegundi, Hampi’s lesser-explored twin village. The ancient Anjanadri Hill, believed to be Hanuman’s birthplace, offered yet another incredible panoramic view after a steep 575-step climb.
Final Meal – Traditional Thali
Before catching my bus back, I indulged in a South Indian thali (₹180)—a feast of rice, sambar, rasam, vegetables, and sweets served on a banana leaf.
Final Thoughts
Hampi’s mystical landscapes, ancient wonders, and bohemian vibes make it a must-visit. And the best part? You don’t need deep pockets to experience its charm. With the right approach and Bino helping me find the best transport, stays, and rentals, I had an unforgettable Hampi trip without breaking the bank.
